Around Thessaly..

Goodmorning and have a nice week people!

Last week I was at my grandpa’s village, situated on the foot of Mount Olympus, remember..?

Before that we visited the beautiful village of Anatoli, the most mountainous village of Kissavos on altitude of 960 meters and 42 kilometers away from Larissa.

Happy 2nd anniversary..!

IMG_7745_Snapseed

Hi everyone! I just realised that Urbanzip is 2 years old..!

The past 6 months we didn’t post as frequently as in the past, but this “neverending” transitional period makes it almost impossible to dedicate the time we would have liked.. So today i’m posting some pics from a beautiful stroll two days ago in the center of Athens, while I was searching urban planning material for my thesis. Looking forward to my graduation, than i’ll have all the time to explore my colourful city!

Happy anniversary!

“Unofficial” Goodbye..

The time has come.. I just left my house in Florence and I’m on my way to Ancona and then to my hometown, Athens.

20140722-071225-25945107.jpg

This change will be really difficult at first. Of course I’ll miss this amazing city and all the people I’m leaving behind. This is an unofficial goodbye not only because I’m coming back soon for my thesis, but because I intend to visit really often! So beware!
Below some photos from this last week in Florence. Have a nice day people!

Tuscany part 4 : Pienza..

Last week I visited one of my favorite places in Tuscany, Pienza!

The town of Pienza is situated in the province of Siena, and more specifically in the Val d’Orcia (val = valley). In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site, and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d’Orcia, was included on the list of UNESCO‘s World Cultural Landscapes. Val d’Orcia is definitely my favorite part of Tuscany and I intend to visit (or walk if I can) the most of it!

IMG_9289u

Pienza was rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, which was the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Italian: Enea Silvio Piccolomini), aRenaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Intended as a retreat from Rome, it represents the first application of humanist urban planning concepts, creating an impetus for planning that was adopted in other Italian towns and cities and eventually spread to other European centers.

The rebuilding was done by Florentine architect Bernardo Gambarelli (known as Bernardo Rossellino) who may have worked with the humanist and architectLeon Battista Alberti, though there are no documents to prove it for sure. Alberti was in the employ of the Papal Curia at the time and served as an advisor to Pius. Construction started about 1459. Pope Pius II consecrated the Duomo on August 29, 1462, during his long summer visit. He included a detailed description of the structures in his Commentaries, written during the last two years of his life. (source)

We tried lots of different styles of their new collections and I loved everything! I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this store, I’m surely coming back soon to do some shopping!

Back to the future..

IMG_2380_Snapseed

Hi everyone!

Usually this time of year I get a nostalgic feeling, a desire to walk by the sea. I’ve already posted here some photos from my favorite walk in my hometown!

Before leaving Athens back in January, I visited the construction site of the new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center designed by Renzo Piano! The project site is located 4.5 km south of the center of Athens, on the edge of Faliro Bay, and the SNFCC is designed as a multifunctional arts, education and entertainment complex which will house the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. It’s been less than a year that the construction began and scheduled to be completed in 2015.

I really look forward to the realization of this project, when it will become the  finale for my favorite walk!

Happy belated birthday Urbanzip!!

Hi everyone!

Last Saturday it was our first birthday! We discussed with Rania about posting something, but between one thing and another we eventually forgot!

Anyway, we want to thank everyone for reading, sharing and giving us feedback! This year was full of moments, bitter or sweet, beautiful walks, new people and many plans for the future. We traveled from Mount Olympus to Rome and from Cyclades to Paris, Venice, Milan, ThessalonikiBarcelona, Valencia, Brussels, Edinburgh, and of course all around Tuscany! We started posting stories, photos, recipes and slowly our group was growing and so did our topics. So besides Rania I would like to thank the 4 other girls of the gang, Andy, Katerina, Stephania and Vera that shared with you and us something of their own, a photo, a story, a journey.

Visit the link below to see some moments of this 1st year together!

Goodbye Athens..

Yesterday night, after a very long and tiring journey, I returned to Florence. I was in Athens for nearly a month, a break that I so much needed. Spending some quality time with family and friends, doing absolutely nothing for some days, a walk by the sea, a stroll downtown Athens or overlooking the Acropolis, drinks with friends I haven’t seen for a long time, cooking with mommy, go to the movies and just relax. Now that this break is over I will have to adapt to the harsh reality of the exams. This implies that my presence here will be from limited to negligible and my posts and photos will mainly come from my iphone. After that, however, I intend to explore every corner of the city, as this is my last year here in Florence.

Below I share with you some moments of my stay in Athens. 🙂

Unusual foggy weekend..

Good morning and have a nice week everyone!

My weekend started and ended at exactly the same place, Piazzale Michelangelo!

On Saturday I had breakfast at Ponte San Niccolò, I love going there and just watching the rowers training. After that I had a long stroll through the streets of Florence until sundown. There was an amazing atmosphere created by the fog, I think this is the first time I see the city covered in fog!

Sunday’s in Florence are dedicated to vintage flea markets and every second Sunday of the month it’s held at Santo Spirito square. Irene bought an incredible bicycle for Boutique Nadine! Then me, Elisabetta, Irene and Nikos went at Magaza’s Sunday market where we found Antonia, Dario, Visnja, Elvira, Stefania, Duilio and Cassius!
