“Unofficial” Goodbye..

The time has come.. I just left my house in Florence and I’m on my way to Ancona and then to my hometown, Athens.

20140722-071225-25945107.jpg

This change will be really difficult at first. Of course I’ll miss this amazing city and all the people I’m leaving behind. This is an unofficial goodbye not only because I’m coming back soon for my thesis, but because I intend to visit really often! So beware!
Below some photos from this last week in Florence. Have a nice day people!

Great music by WHITE CHESTNUT featuring Valentina Nervi and Alessandro Gigli..!

Battistero dressed in Pucci..

20140617-172846-62926698.jpg

It’s been a few months that the baptistery is under construction. Some days ago passing from Piazza Duomo i’ve seen this new look which is totally amazing! So today I passed again and I took some photos with my phone. Enjoy!

Emilio Pucci “dresses” the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the colours and graphics of the Battistero scarf, reinterpreting its façades and becoming a sponsor of the restoration of the building that truly represents the historical-artistic heritage of Florence, dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, the patron saint of the Florence, which stands opposite the Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore in Piazza San Giovanni.

20140617-172947-62987331.jpg

During the celebrations held on the occasion of Pitti Immagine Uomo from the 17th to 20th of June in Florence, visitors will be able to admire the art installation inspired by the Battistero scarf designed by Emilio Pucci in 1957 which shows a view from above the Piazza San Giovanni interpreted in vibrant lemon yellow, orange, fuchsia and Emilio pink.
The Apse side of the Baptistery will be clad in a giant size portrayal of the original framed scarf. The other seven sides of the octagonal building will be restyled à la Emilio Pucci; the monument will thus be clothed with eight printed sheets over 2000 sqm.
This very special scarf signifies the link of Emilio Pucci with Florence, a key reference point for the Maison.
An inauguration cocktail in honour of the art installation will be held on Tuesday June 17th at Palazzo Pucci where the Maison invites visitors to discover the drawing and printing techniques of the scarf through a special experience entitles Design the Dream, celebrating the savoir-faire of the House.
On the occasion of this special event, Emilio Pucci will open its archives to all visitors.
Design the Dream will then continue for a further three days, from Wednesday 18th to Friday 20th June, at the Boutique Emilio Pucci in Florence, to offer customers too the chance to assist to the creation of the historical Battistero scarf, available in several colours at the store. (source)

Unfortunately this year I missed the  Scoppio del Carro, remember this  folk tradition of the city? So me and Nadia went for lunch at 4 Leoni, one of my favorite restaurants where I alaways eat Fiocchetti di pere in salsa di taleggio e asparagi (pasta filled with pear in taleggio cheese and asparagus sauce ) the best dish ever!

Aperitivo time! The weather was great and we were close to Ponte Vecchio, so the only place where you can sit outside without all the tourists passing by is Amblé, situated only a few steps away from the famous ladmark, in a well hidden square away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Number 1 on the unusualflorence map! A space designed as a living room where you can eat and shop at the same time, so first you can have a sandwich and if you like the chair or sofa you are sitting on, or the cup of tea you’re drinking you can actually buy them!

I had a Spritz “Bunny” and then a delicious tramezzino.

Tuscany part 4 : Pienza..

Last week I visited one of my favorite places in Tuscany, Pienza!

The town of Pienza is situated in the province of Siena, and more specifically in the Val d’Orcia (val = valley). In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site, and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d’Orcia, was included on the list of UNESCO‘s World Cultural Landscapes. Val d’Orcia is definitely my favorite part of Tuscany and I intend to visit (or walk if I can) the most of it!

IMG_9289u

Pienza was rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, which was the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Italian: Enea Silvio Piccolomini), aRenaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Intended as a retreat from Rome, it represents the first application of humanist urban planning concepts, creating an impetus for planning that was adopted in other Italian towns and cities and eventually spread to other European centers.

The rebuilding was done by Florentine architect Bernardo Gambarelli (known as Bernardo Rossellino) who may have worked with the humanist and architectLeon Battista Alberti, though there are no documents to prove it for sure. Alberti was in the employ of the Papal Curia at the time and served as an advisor to Pius. Construction started about 1459. Pope Pius II consecrated the Duomo on August 29, 1462, during his long summer visit. He included a detailed description of the structures in his Commentaries, written during the last two years of his life. (source)

Unusual foggy weekend..

Good morning and have a nice week everyone!

My weekend started and ended at exactly the same place, Piazzale Michelangelo!

On Saturday I had breakfast at Ponte San Niccolò, I love going there and just watching the rowers training. After that I had a long stroll through the streets of Florence until sundown. There was an amazing atmosphere created by the fog, I think this is the first time I see the city covered in fog!

Sunday’s in Florence are dedicated to vintage flea markets and every second Sunday of the month it’s held at Santo Spirito square. Irene bought an incredible bicycle for Boutique Nadine! Then me, Elisabetta, Irene and Nikos went at Magaza’s Sunday market where we found Antonia, Dario, Visnja, Elvira, Stefania, Duilio and Cassius!
