Site specific Valentine’s..

Goodmorning Valentines!!

How did you spend the world’s most commercial holiday..? Well, I have to admit that i’m not the kind that embraces the traditional Valentine’s day, but it’s a day that brings out mixed and different emotions for each of us.

I spent it with Nikos and Donatello and we’ve been to Onassis cultural centre and Candy Chang’s installation School of the Future, the first of her three site-specific installations in Athens.

The classroom reinterpreted without teachers, books or pupils. Visitors find themselves in a space with a school desk at one end surrounded by thousands of big, red balloons. They are invited to write down a lesson life has taught them in a notebook on the desk. In so doing, the visitors become teachers and students at one and the same time: by taking part in a school of collective experience in which the shared encyclopaedia of knowledge consists of the lessons of their individual lives, they can teach but they can also learn.

After all the fun we sat down and shared our thoughts in the collective notebook answering it’s 2 questions :

  • What do you think is important to teach our children?
  • What do you wish you learned while you were in school?

What do you think..?

Around Thessaly..

Goodmorning and have a nice week people!

Last week I was at my grandpa’s village, situated on the foot of Mount Olympus, remember..?

Before that we visited the beautiful village of Anatoli, the most mountainous village of Kissavos on altitude of 960 meters and 42 kilometers away from Larissa.

A day at the museum..

IMG_7966_Snapseed

Good morning people! Last Sunday along with Chrysana, Phaedra, Maria and Stefanos we visited the Goulandris Natural History Museum.

Founded in 1965, is home to zoological, botanical, marine, rock, mineral and fossil specimens.

The G.N.H.M. is located in Kifissia, 14, N.E. of Athens. It is housed in an elegant neoclassical building of the 19th Century (1875) which was converted and expanded in order to satisfy the Museum’s educational and scientific requirements. It was the first museum of its kind to be established in 1964, and the first to initiate environmental education in the country.

Happy 2nd anniversary..!

IMG_7745_Snapseed

Hi everyone! I just realised that Urbanzip is 2 years old..!

The past 6 months we didn’t post as frequently as in the past, but this “neverending” transitional period makes it almost impossible to dedicate the time we would have liked.. So today i’m posting some pics from a beautiful stroll two days ago in the center of Athens, while I was searching urban planning material for my thesis. Looking forward to my graduation, than i’ll have all the time to explore my colourful city!

Happy anniversary!

La Sagrada Familia

As you already know, this blog is a viaggio from Athens to Florence. However, this time let us make a stop to Barcelona. I know you’ll tell me there are so many worth-mentioning spots in that city, but I think I will stick to La Sagrada Familia. Maybe because that was the neighborhood I used to stay in during my visit, maybe because Ι have never seen anything equivalent of a Basilica before…in anyway I believe that it deserves a little of our time.

Designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, La Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. Its construction begun in 1882, and in 1883 Gaudí took charge of the project and transformed it thoroughly, combining Gothic with modernist (Catalan Modernism) elements. After Gaudí’s death in 1926, only the 25% of the project was complete. The construction of La Sagrada Familia advanced gradually, yet it remains incomplete.

Entering the Basilica, I could not hide my insuperable feeling when I outfaced the imposing Christ on the Cross. The sculptures hanging all over the church indicate its sanctity in combination with the noticeable silence, despite the great number of visitors. Of course, I could not miss the tour on the towers of La Sagrada Familia, from where the view is something more than breathtaking.

SAMSUNG SAMSUNG

From where I stand, La Sagrada Familia is a must-see in someone’s lifetime, independently of whether he prefers exploring the cultural elements of a place or not.

Words cannot always describe the majesty that the eyes witness.

“Unofficial” Goodbye..

The time has come.. I just left my house in Florence and I’m on my way to Ancona and then to my hometown, Athens.

20140722-071225-25945107.jpg

This change will be really difficult at first. Of course I’ll miss this amazing city and all the people I’m leaving behind. This is an unofficial goodbye not only because I’m coming back soon for my thesis, but because I intend to visit really often! So beware!
Below some photos from this last week in Florence. Have a nice day people!
